The Joy of Pairing

Wine pairing is an art that becomes even more fun when it involves candy! The varied flavors of Halloween treats, from sweet to savory and sometimes tangy, provide a perfect canvas for taste exploration. Challenge yourself to try out new flavor combinations, and you may just create new Halloween traditions.

Before we jump into the pairings, let’s discuss essential tips for selecting the right wines for your candy selections.

Pro Tips for Perfect Pairings

Understanding flavor profiles can significantly enhance your pairing experience. Follow these straightforward tips:

  • Sweet Matches: Typically, wine should be sweeter than the candy. When the sweetness is mirrored, it allows both the wine and candy to shine.

  • The Power of Contrast: Don't shy away from contrasts; pairing salty candies with sweet wines can yield delightful surprises.

  • Fruit Flavors Unite: Fruity wines can highlight the natural flavors in many candies. Nutty or oaky wines are perfect companions for chocolatey delights.

With these tips in mind, let’s dive into the delicious world of Halloween candy and wine pairings!

(HUMAN) NOTES:

When I was growing up in rural Wayne County, the neighborhood dads would take all the kids trick-or-treating. Our last stop was always the farm down the street owned and run by Farmer Romie, a Polish-Russian immigrant who was approximately a century behind the technological curve-- still using draft horses, home remedies, and "natural" crop fertilizer (i.e., manure.) While we children took a few minutes to enjoy the fruits of our evening, Romie snuck the dads down to his cellar to enjoy a few swigs of his home-made hard cider. It was an annual ritual... and I dare say a better pairing of wine with Halloween than anything AI has come up with.
